My Mother's Special Gujiya

Gujiya is one sweet that most North Indians symbolize with Holi... but that I learnt only in my freshman year in college. At home, my mother used to make them all the time. Father and I liked them much, so Maa would often make them to go with the evening chai or just like that, as munchies after a long day's work. She even packed some in my tuck box when I left for college and that is when I realized how good and special her Gujiyas were. My friends loved them and reminded me to get some back after the holidays. Maa obliged and soon that became a ritual...a ritual that continued even after my marriage. I believe she would have continued to pamper us with her supplies had we still been in India... but... we are not... So the other day, at my request, Maa finally parted with her special recipe and said I could share it with all of you if I liked....

Anyone who has had Gujiya  will testify that besides the filling, a crunchy crust is the next best thing about it. Often, a wrong  proportion of ingredients and incorrect frying temperatures are considered responsible for a not-so-crisp exterior. Maa says, besides taking those obvious precautions, one also needs to add a bit of sugar syrup to the dough mixture while kneading it. According to her, this little detail does wonders to the texture of the crust. My grandmother had apparently cracked this halwai's-secret and had shared it with Maa and she claims that it is this little thing that makes her sweets stand out. I tried out her trick this time and was so thrilled with the outcome..

The initial plan was to take some of the sweets to our friend's place and play Holi there. But it got too cold to go out, so we smeared colors on each others faces and celebrated Holi at home with colors and my mother's special Gujiya....

Now a quick word about Mawa , before I go on to the recipe...

Mawa, also known as Khoya, is made by simmering full-fat milk over low medium heat for hours until it reduces to a mass of slightly caramelized granular dough-like milk solids. If you have the time and energy, you can make your own Mawa at home, just as Maa did,  or like me, you can skip the hard work and buy your mawa from the Indian store... (You can find the recipe here.)

Subho Bijaya & Weekly Menu Plan

Subho Bijaya to all !

Today is Bijaya Dashami, the day when the festivities for this years puja ends and the wait for next years Durga Puja begins...Right now most Indians are probably returning back from the ghats(river banks) closest to their localities after immersing Ma Durga's idol in the waters.... Cries of  "Aschi Bochor Abar Hobe" and "Durga Mai ki Jai"(Glory to the goddess) still resounding in the air....

Sitting here in our apartment in NY, I am feeling nostalgic and dearly missing my family and friends... as i shuffle through the photographs from previous pujas and recount all the good times we have had...

We did go to Washington for the pujas. though the chantings happened and the little one enjoyed drumming "the dhak", nothing felt the same. It wasn't the Puja of my childhood. it wasn't the puja of my memories..

Hopefully next year around this time ... we'll be at home and gleefully   exchanging Bijaya greetings, hugging our friends, touching the feet of the elders for blessings and blessing the young ones with all our hearts...Really puja or for that matter life in general life does not feel quite the same unless you are with your family and loved ones....

Hope you all had a wonderful time with your family and friends... Once again my heartiest Bijaya greetings to all and lots of love and blessings to the young ones....

Gulacha Ganapati

Happy Ganesh Chaturthi !!

It is the day when people all over India celebrate Vighna Vinashak Ganesha, the remover of all obstacles. I had wished to celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi in my own way.... so throughout the day i laboured over a piece of art of the almighty. but my portrait of Ganesha did not get done in time.. so i had to defer posting it for a while....

But while i was on FB I came across this awesome Gulacha Ganapati  by Shriram Kelkar.... A murti of Ganapati carved out from Jaggery !! Starting from scratch, it apparently took Shriram 8 - 10 hours to finish this amazing art work of the almighty !!!! He mentions that carving the ideal from gur is a family tradition that he has been following with much dedication. His wife who carved out Ganesha's vahan, the Mushika, mentions that as Gur(jaggery) tends to get soft and starts melting, Shriram had to constantly use rice flour to keep his hands from getting sticky. Kudos to Shriram and his wife !! this ideal certainly reflects your patience, talent and immense devotion to Lord Ganesha !!

Janmasthami, 2011

Janmasthami marks the birth anniversary of Lord Krishna.  and ever since we met, husband and me have been celebrating our Gopal's birthday by inviting our friends over for some fruits and sweets. but with a little Gopal (as we often refer to our little man as...) budding within, it was a little difficult for me to set up the place like we usually do... so this year for Janmasthami it was just husband, me and our kicking champion offering little Gopal some sweet and salty savouries ....

my sis-in-law Sweta left sometime back. after an extremely busy 3-day Diwali preparation, right now i am feeling rather laid back... yesterday evening was good. few friends came over. some helped us light the lamps and others helped with the last moment decoration touch-ups. smog from the crackers that had been burnt had filled the air outside.. so we decided to celebrate a peaceful Diwali with lamps, diyas, time-less melodies by R.D Burman-Salil Choudhury, sweets and samosas....

A very big thank you to all our friends who made the evening special for us.....

Diwali extravaganza... HRI.

Vidhya apartment, HRI, 2008, photograph by Shubhaditya
I do not have very explicit memory of how I spent  Diwali before 2003. yes, 2003 is the year I got admitted in HRI and eversince Diwali has meant much more to me than it had ever meant before... This is how the two hostels in HRI look on Diwali....

Hostel 1, HRI, Diwali, 2006
My husband, Nishi spent his first graduate year in this hostel. His room was the the fourth door on the ground-floor....
Hostel 2, HRI, Diwali, 2006. This is the hostel where I used to live from 2003 to 2005, till I got married to Nishi...
till date, every year with equal enthusiasm, the first year graduate students of HRI collect funds for Diwali,  hand a part of it to Mewalalji, - who very diligently gets the diyas in advance, soaks them in water over night and then helps the students to line them up in the hostel corridors and on the road sides... so that they can all be lit up by 6 pm on  Diwali .

this morning my sis-in-law Sweta has come. i told her about my plans of making the paper lamps. she said she had done it before and volunteered to help me out with some of the finer-time-taking-details of the project. we'll go out shopping this evening and later at night we have plans to plunge into our lamp-project. hopefully things will go well and tomorrow i'll have some nice pictures to post... how are your preparations coming up... i hope you all are having a great time this festive season !

Lamp Inspiration....

in my previous post i had mentioned that i'll be posting photographs of Diwali-celebrations in HRI through the rest of the week. so is a photograph of two lamps that Archana, Shrobona and Ipsita had made last year at HRI.

aren't they simply gorgeous ! I love the peacock.. its so intricate... so beautiful... one can easily see how much effort had been put into making that lovely lamp... yet all the effort and all the hard work did not budge them from making eight such beauties....  only the superwomen of HRI could do anything so elaborate just for an evening !!

lamps lighting the entrance of hostel 2, HRI.

I had finished my Ph.d by then and was at home for Diwali... so i couldn't be a part of this Diwali extravaganza.... but had i known in advance about their plans, i would have certainly made an effort to be there..... i am contemplating making such a lamp for my apartment this year. 3 days to go... will i be able to make it... wish me luck... i'll really need it to match it up to anything as beautiful as the ones displayed above !

Smitten....

The photograph is a rangoli that Archana, Nabamita and Suvankar had made in front of a hostel in HRI for Diwali, 2005 most likely..

another four days to go before Diwali. but noone seems to be excited enough.....
had i been at my Alma mater i probably would have been busy with the preparations... planning for the decorations and the lighting arrangements.. right now i am desperately missing the pre-Diwali-late-night-sessions with Archana, Priyotosh and Subho wherein creativity and gossip would go hand-in-hand accompanied by intermittent rounds of
adrak-wali-chai (ginger-tea)....
during Diwali, HRI is certainly the place to be....

smitten by nostalgia, i have decided to post some old photographs of Diwali celebrations at HRI throughout this week... so expect bright sparkling photographs in the next few days.... and here are some photos of Diwali celebrations in HRI, taken by Girish Kulkarni and Nishita Desai in 2008.

Subho Bijaya !!

Hope you all had a wonderful time with family and friends during the four days of Durga Puja. Wish you all Subho Bijaya ! I just got back to Chennai and here are some photographs of Sindoor Khela and Durga Bisharjan....

After four days of puja festivities he idol of Ma Durga along with her two daughters Laskshmi and Saraswati and her two sons Ganesha and Kartika were immersed on Dashami with cries of "Asche bochor aabar hobe" and "Durga Mai ki jai" resounding everywhere.... and then like every year the Bijaya Dashami celebrations followed....

12.10.10

Puja Greetings to all ....

just two more days to go before the dhakis start drumming their dhaks, before the sound of conches fill the air...           before  young girls and ladies wearing crisp new sarees crowd every inch of Kolkata...
just a day to go before i land in Kolkata and immerse myself completely in the festivities of Durga puja ..
.... my shopping is done. my bags are packed.  and i am all set to leave. On the pretext of my present work load I had earlier decided to stay back in Chennai. but festivals without family do not feel like festivals at all. so i made my tickets for home last week and i am leaving tomorrow... in less than 28 hours from now i'll be home... sitting in our drawing room couch sipping chai with ma as she shows me her puja shopping and i show her mine.... :)  I am 32, but even today puja vacations excite me as much as they used to when I was a little girl ..... I guess certain emotions never change or erode with time... they remain the same and bring back the good memories over and over again......

Hope you all have a wonderful time with family, friends and all your loved ones....
eat lots, drink healthy and make merry... catch you all after the pujas.....

take care,
love, T
