Under the Magnolia...

read this poem at reading my leaves and could not resist posting...  its so apt for times like this when heinous crimes and tragedies strike all around... make us pause for a while but not too long.. because we are thankful that we were spared this time...

“Under the Magnolia” by Carolyn Miller

I give thanks because I do not have
a great sorrow. My village has not
burned, my child has not died, my body
is not ravaged. I sit here on the ground
lucky, lucky. Somewhere, villages are burning,
somewhere, not too far away, children
are dying; in this great urban park
painstakingly constructed over sand dunes,
people live in the flowering bushes. But
just here, in front of me, is a bride and groom;
here is a child running with
a red ball; another child is rolling on
the grass. All I have to do is to decide
how much fear to let inside my heart
in this fragile, created place, this bowl of grass
surrounded by palms and cypresses and
shaggy-barked cedars and trees
whose names I do not know, long fronds
falling, clusters of lilac fruits depending like
bouquets. All we can do is trust
that we belong here with the flowers: white
iris and Iceland poppies, a blur
of primroses, beds where flowers are
a crowd of color, where they close in the dark,
where the first light finds them starred
with dew. The trees seem to know
what I do not know; even the cultivated grass
understands some chain of being I can only
guess at, whether it is God’s mind, or
the erotic body of the Goddess, or some
abstract kind of love, or
some longing for existence that includes
the fern trees, the new buds of cones on the
conifers, the white butterflies, the skating boys,
the hooked new buds of the magnolia
that look like claws holding on
to life, the curved thick petals of magnolia
in the grass, some gone to rust, some creased,
some streaked, others freckled, others magenta
at the curved stem end, others cracked,
all lined with long veins branching out
to the petal’s edge.

first love

remain the way you are...
blurring ... yet pristine and pure...
frequent me not today
and mar my you of yesterday

let me relish you in my dreams ...
tracing your hazing trails....
stay where you are...
near.....  yet far away..

found this today while shuffling old files.

Falling Thirds

We measure our names the same.
Across the world, when children
call out for a friend, their mother,

their favorite white goat—they have
the same intonation, the same fall
and litlt to their voice, no matter

their language;  Jahh-ee!  Mah-ma!
Pehh-dro!  My music teacher friend says
this is falling thirds:  this is proof we spoke

the same language before Babel, that maybe
a tower did fall into rock and dust, gliding
our tongues slicker past any understanding.

We speak little wants, call little kisses
into our ears across beanfields, sand,
saltwater.  Still, we sing the same songs.

we are things of dry hours and involuntary plan.......

We are things of dry hours and the involuntary plan,
Grayed in, and gray. “Dream” makes a giddy sound, not strong
Like “rent,” “feeding a wife,” “satisfying a man.”

But could a dream send up through onion fumes
Its white and violet, fight with fried potatoes
And yesterday’s garbage ripening in the hall,
Flutter, or sing an aria down these rooms

Even if we were willing to let it in,
Had time to warm it, keep it very clean,
Anticipate a message, let it begin?

We wonder. But not well! not for a minute!
Since Number Five is out of the bathroom now,
We think of lukewarm water, hope to get in it.

his last words...

it must have been a decade
that I hadn't stepped outside that door.
with him lying in his corner of the bed,
and my days tuned to his mood and health...
this had begun to feel like home.
and I had no complains....

but last night they took him away
said, he breathed no more, whizzed no more
heard me no more....
then in words less harsh they let me know
that I too should leave,
they needed me here no more...

they helped me gather my remains-
layer the summation of my life
in two bags-a case and chains..
paid me the monthly wage;
and asked the driver to drive me to the bus-station
from where the buses would take me to my destination-
-my home from where the master had brought me hence
several decades ago...

But as the bus embarked the rickety-roads
a strange hollowness grabbed me whole...
fuzzy faces of  dear ones flashed across
reminding how wretched it is to be alive yet alone...
And just when I thought I would choke to my end
from the green-alleys my master echoed....
loud and clear in his heavy voice -
like the other day   I heard him recall......
''Grow old along with me!    Amy!
The best is yet to be ...''

letter to chuiya.... my li'l sister

Sweet little chuiya,
The clock just struck four and there.....
Do you hear  the golawala call ?
Do you hear the clatter of his cart-wheels
The shrills following him thence ?

Ever since the day of the mela
I haven't had a single gola....
saved every aana in my pot
so that together we can have  orange and kala khatta ,-
when someday-    a policewala brings you home.

Li'l sister, I promise
I'll buy you the red and golden bangles,
             the shining bindis you adore...
I'll even give you my gudiya
for which you had begged and implored...
My dear sister please come home
I'll never fuss with you again
I'll give you my mala and lehenga...
O' come home for ammi's sake.....

At night,  after the lights dim off
I have often heard ammi sulk,
heard her cry, whimper sometimes
and say, Chuiya, my l'il one.... my li'l darling child....
She thinks you have forgotten us
or something terrible has struck...
But abbu comforts, -says, have faith in Allah,
and soon  He'll  bring our gudiya to us...

I wish i could keep abbu's faith
and not be torn like ammi...
But four Ids have passed without you
and the fifth   i am scared   will pass by too...
I fear that you've forgotten us
and blame myself hence....
Had i known li'l sister   you'll abandon us thus
I would never have left you   and run after the candywala thence...

*aana is penny,  gola is ice-candy,  golawala is ice-candy man, gudiya is doll, mela is fair in Hindi.

Wishing and wanting to see you, I step on thin ice....

Oh, how I wished and wanted to see
you, but you were a person I could not
see at will. With the tip of my shoe I
played with the thin ice that had
frozen on a small pool of water. I did
not know what to do with my feelings
of wanting to see you.

When two people fall in love, it is
sometimes possible for them to see
each other whenever they want. But
with me, I did not have the courage to
go see him, so I stayed at the edge of
the thin ice.

Like the thin ice in the early spring,
my feelings were so fragile that with a
small shock they would have broken
apart.

This is all I bring today.......

The skies can't keep their secrets
They tell it to the hills-
The hills just tell the orchards-
  And they the daffodils !

A bird, by chance, that goes that way
Soft overheard the whole.
If I should bribe the little bird,
Who knows what she would tell ?

                                                                                                                        the complete poem                                                                                                                          .

Coz all you need to bring back that zeal ....

on a swampy soggy groggy rainy day
....... is a cup of piping hot chai, few anecdotes and a lots of inspiring words.....

He who binds to himself a joy
Doth the winged life destroy;
But he who kisses the joy as it flies
Lives in eternity's sunrise.

The man within.. the man without......

is it remorse or my imagination of it....
whose reflection I often see in his eyes...
but i have never felt upto it to approach him and ask him how he is today....
if he needs that extra shirt that i haven't worn since and have no use of...
the one i could gladly part with... but haven't parted with till now..

I wonder what his friends call him...
I wonder if he has any friends at all...
may be he once had many.... many many years back...
when his visage was a little more orderly, a little more friendly perhaps..
but  i doubt if any of them are still in touch .....
he looks so utterly forlorn...

i pity him at times, his friendlessness... and wonder if he pities himself too...
but i have never seen him cry...
i have only seen his remorse eyes become stone-still at times...
he never begs... never asks for the essentials..
till yesterday he was in a loincloth but did not seem to bother much...
today he is barely clad but better than yesterday...
perhaps someone took pity and forwent that extra pair of pants that he had....

he wanders in the streets by the day
and sleeps on the cemented brick-lined path at night.....
i have noticed him thus and imagined my  story of him...

sometimes i wish to talk...
or greet him the way i greet all others at work...
just look his way and share a nod perhaps...
but then i don't...
i excuse myself saying.... he is better off his way..
why deter his acceptance of his life by a few frivolous acts...
but deep within i realise that my reasons are only an excuse....
an excuse to shelter the inhibitions that have been groomed into my being
i stare at him thus... just like i did yesterday
imagining the infinite possibilities that lay hidden behind that dishevelled outer frame.

I wish to flee......

Conventions and traditions are suffocating me.
I wish to break free....
flee from this life
and  live in a small tidy hut by the sea
a hut with thatched-straw-roof, stocked  with loots of books and endless art supplies to survive me...

a hut by the sea, where the breeze will soothe
and the sea will lull me to sleep
and the morning rays will kiss me at dawn
while i swing in my hammock by the beach
still hugging my book dreamily ...

Lost World

I was sleeping,
when the morn-bird cooed-
I was wandering
where the pepping sun stood.
When I awoke,
the world glittered bright and gay
ah! I missed the childhood
of a beautiful day!

 – Soumya Das

The poem is by one of my friends and colleagues Soumya Das... I love how simple and well-worded it is and so wanted to share with you ... and the photograph is from another friend's assimilated collection.  In his words this tiny little blue bird used to wait for them every morning perched on the thatched straw roof of their hut  in Dholavira, an ancient city dotted with ruins of the Indus Valley civilization ....

Have a Nice day !

It's all I have to bring to-day,
   This, and my heart beside,
This, and my heart, and all the fields,
   And all the meadows wide.
Be sure you count, should I forget, --
Some one the sum could tell, --
This, and my heart, and all the bees
  Which in the clover dwell.

 ~ Emily Dickinson

Wanderlusty me !

At the beach tonight I saw the moon rise...
and the tiding waves simmering in moon-light...
while my friend narrated stories of his trips to the golden forts of Rajasthan,
the hills of Darjeeling and Karshiyang...
the hills where the clouds had descended.. touched him and his tea-cup,
then trailed their way through his room leaving tiny dewdrops clinging to his cup
perhaps ... so that he would not mistake their descend for a dream
and know for sure they had visited him....

And ever since my mind has been wandering into those hills, where bliss resides, clouds embrace and dreams alight to touch every being....

[the picture is from the label of cavit collection pinot noir 2008... isn't it pretty !]

A painting and a poem ....

Words of wisdom ......

 GYPSY

I asked a gypsy pal
To imitate an old image
And speak old wisdom.
She drew in her chin,
Made her neck and head
The top piece of a Nile obelisk and said:

Snatch off the gag from thy mouth, child,
And be free to keep silence.
Tell no man anything for no man listens,
Yet hold thy lips ready to speak.

~ Carl Sandburg

The painting called "Gypsy Woman" is by the Russian artist Nikolai Yaroshenko. I found it by google search and wished to share... Isn't it lovely ?

Mistake not the silence .....

Too many times we have let our pride speak for us
       and therefore remained silent....
Too many times we have resolved to revolt
       but just then quietened...
but mistake not our silence for weakness or consent.....

       we feared being unveiled
       we feared being naked
while your deaf and blind selves  judged, mocked and littered us again...
we feared being misconstrued and lightened..
so every time we resolved to protest
    we walked up to you
then swallowed and smothered ourselves again ......
but mistake not our silence for weakness or consent .......

31.3.10

everydayness.....

Life does not always happen
sometimes you have to make it happen

for that -
you must fall in love with the mundane,
                  bring out the life therein.......

participate passionately in the event called life..
more often you must want to feel alive
...and breath not gently simply to survive !!

rewind-edit-play....

Teenage was in such a haste..
   i could barely relish ..
i had only blinked,   and it had vanished..

if i could,  i would rewind
and this time spare me of the oddities...

              - love me a little more, worry a lot less,
bask in the winter sun, swim at summer bays...
 indulge unsparingly  creating memories  ...

.......................................................................... ................ waking from social anesthesia...

i am done being pretentious
  done playing by the norms

it was never my way i realized
and will never be at all.

'tis reposeful to be honest, -  say what i feel
or be sober sometimes and everything conceal .
i'll rather be a woman with passion and flaws
 than play by the norms
and be a petty pretentious petite doll...
